At Creative Riot Software, we’ve been working on the concept of PC Power Management for well over a year, and ENPOWER is what we have to show for it, an install-and-forget tool that helps organizations ensure that their PCs switch to low power mode (sleep/standby/hibernate) when they’re idle. ENPOWER should realistically help you *incrementally* avoid wastage of between 50-200 kWH per user per year depending on your computer type and usage patterns. (The Climate Savers Computing initiative backed by Energy Star, WWF, Google, Microsoft, HP, Intel and others and states that you can save more than 600kWH using PC Power Management)
ENPOWER - PC Power Management Simplified
We’re planning to launch a Home Edition of ENPOWER, replete with all the features that go into the Enterprise Edition, and we want to distribute it for free. We’ve also built a Facebook Application that lets you know how much you’ve saved, how much your friends are saving, and what the worldwide savings thus far look like. We plan to call the initiative ‘The Social Power Array‘. The premise is simple – while enterprises will pay for such a tool, an individual user has little or no incentive to spend on ENPOWER. However, if a large number of home users do download Enpower (me), our free application, the impact can be significant, as illustrated below.

The numbers are compelling. If even 0.1% of all users on Facebook (300,000 users) install Enpower, they could collectively save nearly 30 million kWH annually (at 100-150 kWH per PC per year). Large figures can have a numbing effect on the mind, so we’ve tried to put this in perspective (without further compounding the complexity of the statistic by mentioning how many times we could circumnavigate the globe or how many trips to the moon we could make). The
Nellis Air Force Base Solar Power System at Nevada is America’s largest solar photovoltaic array covering 140 acres of land that cost over $100 million to construct (
according to data released by the White House).
The Nellis Solar Power System generates 30 million kWH annually, the same amount of power we hope to save through 0.1% of Facebook’s users. Imagine what 1% of all those users could achieve, or better still, 10%.

We’re not claiming that we’re eco-crusaders and that this will be world-altering; we’re saying it will definitely be significant. But what’s even more important is, it’s actionable. Right now.
We believe firmly in the power of the social collective. And we’d hope the Social Power Array ends up being much more than a thought provoking article in a glossy or a leading blog. Sorry, we don't have a version for an OS other than Windows yet, but will develop one if there is demand. What distro are you on?
